Technological Crime Unit
HISTORY
The Technological Crime Unit was formed in 2005 in order to provide specialized technical investigative assistance to other units of the Niagara Regional Police Service with the forensic
examination of computers, cell phones and other devices which may contain evidence in relation to criminal investigations undertaken by our members.
In addition, assistance is provided to other units with respect to Internet related investigations.
We also conduct research and testing into new investigative tools used by the unit and we provide tools and training on a variety of topics to other investigative units.
The Niagara Regional Police Service is well-positioned to effectively respond to crimes involving modern technology, and is constantly looking ahead to evolving trends.
IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE
If you wish to report a crime involving the Internet (Email, Chat, Ebay, etc), computers, or cell phones, you must report through the Uniform Branch. The Technological Crime Unit is not a primary investigative unit, and does not accept complaints directly from members of the public.
WHAT IS TECHNOLOGICAL CRIME?
Technological Crime can include many types of crimes; some old, and some new. Technological Crime can be loosely defined as the use of computers, cell phones and/or the Internet in the commission of crimes, and includes cases where evidence is stored in electronic format. Technological Crime includes cases where the computer system itself is the target of the crime, such as thefts of computers, and network hacking cases.
